About the Lyceum
Foreign Languages and Probation Periods

Linguistic education at the Lyceum aims at raising a personality who is able to speak two languages to a high standard. In the curriculum there are 5 classes of English a week which start in the first grade. French is the second language which starts in the 5th grade. The 10th and the 11th grades take up to 6 English classes a week.

The Lyceum language programs are aimed not only at the development of speaking skills, but are also closely connected with the studies of history of world civilizations as well the history and literature of Great Britain and the USA. The conception of language education in the Lyceum provides many measures to breakdown the child’s language barrier, namely:

  • Children study in very small groups; a group of ten children is to be divided in two;
  • A native – speaking teacher works with the children permanently;
  • Probation periods are usually held in language summer schools;
  • A range of English and French materials in use as well as audio- and video- manuals that are exceptionally authentic

    If needed, there is an opportunity for practice of extra individual classes. From the tenth grade the students of the Lyceum, along with the Lyceum program, study using materials which get them ready for the entrance to the Higher School of Economics which is a preliminary stage for FCE Cambridge exam.

    The Lyceum also holds language holidays, which introduce the children to the culture and traditions of English-speaking countries, and organizes theatre performances in English and French. The Lyceum students annually participate in language Olympiads while the teachers participate in British Council programs.

Language summer schools are of great help in studying foreign languages. The Lyceum offers a program for a foreign study period in England as well as in France. We have a separate program of such educational trips.

English language studies are supported by the system of language summer schools which are carefully selected and examined by M.M. Kononova, the principal of the Lyceum.
French language is getting improved in the process of educational visits in Belgium (Brussels, Notre Dame de Champs school) and in France (Anncy, Bertholle Lyceum; Paris, Saint-Germent Lyceum).

The child is immersed into the world of French since the start of his correspondence with his foreign peers from these schools, therefore the Lyceum students come for their exchange period to their French or Belgian friends. During these trips they study not only French, but also get a wide thorough introduction into cultural realities of French-speaking world which is obtained through quite unique excursions and French-speaking parties.

Cultural exchange is mutual, as the Lyceum students bring with them musical performances and folklore programs which they show in the hosting schools.
